Jennings’ remodel began in June last year, and the grand re-opening took place on Veterans Day in November of 2017. “Simply by word of mouth we’re seeing a lot of new faces who always say, ‘Wow, we never expected this!’” “The longtime patrons love the retro remodel," says Jennings. ![]() She gave the bar a few upgrades, while maintaining the unique charm that building held. She wanted to keep the place going, but also felt the bar needed some tender loving care. Jennings stepped in as the new owner last May when the previous operator passed away unexpectedly. It technically has a Powell address so you can 100% say we are the oldest bar in Knoxville!” “After consulting with the property owners and the County Clerk’s office it has been determined that the Chatterbox Tavern it is the oldest bar still operating with a Knoxville address,” says Jennings of her historic business. One thing has remained the same at 8227 Chapman Highway, and that is the unique appeal of the historic South Knoxville bar. During that time, ownership has changed hands and regulars have come and gone. The Chatterbox Tavern has been a Knoxville staple for over 60 years. “Everyone is welcome at The Chatterbox Tavern," says new owner Dee Jennings. Knoxville’s oldest bar is under new ownership and received a facelift, but regulars can still expect the comfortable feel of their old, usual place.
